I am an excellent student with a high GPA and superior language skills. The Marine Corps will not take me because I have a tattoo on my calf that is slightly bigger than my hand. If we start thinking that people with visible tattoos are incapable of being good and professional Marines, the Marine Corps will lose it's superior fighting force. They are losing candidates daily that could be the future leaders of the corps. Who is to say that a person with a tattoo that is out of regulation would not be as good, if not better, at leading Marines as someone who does not have any tattoos? I have always dreamed of holding the title of Marine, and I got the tattoo prior to the policy change. It is time for the personal preferences of a few powerful people to stop determining who would or would not make a good Marine. Ask your children, ask your neighbors... "If you had someone fighting for your life and your survival, would you really care if they had a tattoo?" I don't want to join the Marine Corps to get a job with a fortune 500 company, yet I am being held to the same (if not stricter) personal appearance standards. The Marine Corps is turning into the boy scouts. The focus is shifting from readiness in battle to looking professional in battle. This policy must change in order for the Marine Corps to remain on top. My congressman would vouch for me, and would be willing to give me a congressional waiver, but even he was told that with a congressional waiver, my tattoo would still be denied.Feb 26th, 2013Someone from Roselle Park, NJ writes:
I am a 19 year old looking to serve his country with the most elite fighting force USMC. It has been a dream of mine, but i was denied because i have my grandmothers name (who passed away) tattooed on my right wrist, nothing gang, drug, etc, related. I think its un-American to deny me that right.REPORT COMMENTS

I have a SMALL tattoo on my back that you can just barely see above my shirt collar (like a centimeter at the very most). I believe it is unfair to deny someone their right to fight for their country due to another right that we have - to do what we please to our bodies - as long as it does not offend others.REPORT COMMENTS

I really hope the chain of command drops this policy, but I doubt it because of the military budget cut. The marines doesn't need you, you need the marines and the way the recruitment goes; its quality over quantity.. Good luck to everyone and this petitionREPORT COMMENTS

Recently I tried to enlist into the corpse witch has always been a dream of mine, now I can't because I have a half sleeve and they won't accept wavers. This saddens me for it was my passion to become one.REPORT COMMENTS

I'm AD USAF and have tattoos on my left arm. If they would drop the tattoo policy, I'd definitely switch services. The USMC's mission just appeals to me more.REPORT COMMENTS

It shouldn't matter where your tattoo is located or "visible" if I cared about "hiding" things that mean something to me I wouldn't get them tattooed in the first place. The whole intent of a tattoo is to show art and things of interest to that individual. Hense why you legally have to be an adult to get one. Should be your decision and yours alone. All Marines are going to do. Especially "Grunts" is push the limit and get them anyways.REPORT COMMENTS

Marines should have the ability as adults to make their own decision on how tattoos will affect them post Marine Corps. All the policy does is contribute to the discriminating in this countryREPORT COMMENTS

This is discrimination and needs to be ended. We are Americans we pay taxes and all Americans should deserve the right to service and should only be disqualified if they can not perform their duties efficiently. Nothing shall prohibit any American citizen from service not Felonies, Tattoos or even Health problems. We pay taxes for our military and deserve the right to serve.REPORT COMMENTS
