I have seen firsthand within my family the terrible burden of chronic pain and then watching medical care be taken away abruptly. We need to protect everyone with chronic pain... we're all just one car accident away from needing this kind of help.REPORT COMMENTS

People who suffer chronic pain are not criminals. We should not be denied medical care just because we hurt all the time. Pain steals all that is good in our lives some days I would rather be dead than have to deal with yet another day of pain from my pancreatitis.REPORT COMMENTS

Having chronic illness that causes pain and nausea is NOT something I ever wished for. Needing to be on pain medication, ie: narcotics, to be able to live outside of a hospital is necessary for me so I can take care of my family. I am no longer able to work due to my illness & have had many life or death surgeries to prolong my life. I have never used illegal drugs and I have only drank alcohol a handful of times. I do NOT abuse my pain medication either. When I do end up in the ER, it is NOT because I've taken all my home medication and need the high of IV meds, it's because my pain and nausea has increased to a point that my home meds don't even touch it. I am NOT a drug addict, abuser, drug seeker or any of the other nasty labels some hospital staff has likely called me and other like me. There needs to be more continued education for doctors and hospital staff regarding chronic illnesses, especially those that cause pain, like chronic pancreatitis, gastroparesis, fibromyalgia, etc etc. Patient empathy & sympathy training as well as teaching staff to not make judgements of patients, especially before meeting them. We shouldn't be shamed out of going to the hospital to get help for our illnesses just because providers lack the education needed. Thank you for allowing me to comment.REPORT COMMENTS

It took me a YEAR to find a doctor who took my illness seriously and my pain seriously. I have a chronic condition that will probably kill me because it is rare. Please stop making us out to be criminals, and stop expecting doctors to automatically consider pain patients drug addicts!REPORT COMMENTS

I have Chronic Pancreatitis!! I have been treated horribly by ER staff that have no clue on how to deal with us regarding pain!! In 2013 I spent over 6 months in the hospital, several times entering the ER to be admitted for week long stays. I have been abused by staff!! I have been labeled as an addict due to pain breaking through the pain medication I am on!! It wouldn't be bad, but I have a 3" binder there with my history from my doctors with protocol for me and I am still labeled!! All I can say is I hope Karma bites them back!REPORT COMMENTS

I have chronic pancreatitis and when I go into emergency rooms they docs and nurses do not treat u right think u r an alcoholic not true treat us all the same with compassion and not believe or cut u down for your pain! Pancreatitis patients go through this way to often the drug seekers ruin it for us who need it its not our fault there is no cure but pain management and fluids treat us with respect!REPORT COMMENTS

Have been severely mistreated by several doctors. As soon as they see you have pain or on pain medicine they write you off. I was a doctor before I got sick. Something has to change.REPORT COMMENTS

I have struggled with chronic pain due to pancreatitis for just over 10yrs. It has hijacked my life. I have met a few kind, understanding souls but by far much more who lacked compassion. Please don't criminalize those who are already suffering.REPORT COMMENTS

i have a chronic illness and though my personal drs are great, experience in the ER CAN BE HORRIBLE. I have chronic pancreatitis due to a congenital malformation and the pain can be horrific. Going to the hospital is frightening since drs and nurses are not always sympathetic. I have an easier time than many of my fellow sufferers because I am not on public assistance and I have supportive family. Not everyone is as fortunate. I am also a retired nurse and the fear of getting patients addicted can at times out weigh the need to reduce pain for people chronically suffering. No one should suffer. We don't allow our pets to suffer. Please help educate and reform!REPORT COMMENTS
